Evan's Therapy

We went to Evan's weekly therapy session on Monday, and Mr. Tripp (the speech pathologist) said that Evan is doing so well that we are going to change his goals. For those of you who don't know, Evan has been seeing Mr. Tripp since September, because he has been so behind in his speech. When he started at 17 months, he had no words, didn't babble, and didn't really have any sounds at all. In the last month he has acquired a ton of words that actually mean something, and he has even more sounds, and he tries to have conversations now, which just sound like gibberish, but is actually a good thing, because he is trying to actually talk.

Well, at Monday's appointment Evan said every sound that was asked of him and then some. So, starting next Monday, he will be asked to "move up a level". We will work on getting two-letter words sounded out all the way (in, on, up, to), then he will move up to 3-letter words (top, mom, dad, mat-things like that). Meanwhile we are trying to get him to say 2 and 3 word sentences, which he has a few that he says already that he probably hears too many times- don't touch, bad boy, up please, off please, and my new favorite is "see ya soon" which they say at the end of Blue's Clues.

Evan was diagnosed originally with a mixed language disorder, both expressive and receptive, so there are things that he does in therapy that are also helping with the receptive part. Like following directions and recognizing objects, etc. I was never worried about that part of the disorder because I thought that he was a little young to know whether he was getting things that were told to him, and I still think that he is okay on that aspect. He just didn't make any sounds!

Mr. Tripp, which by the way that is his first name, is really thrilled at the progress he has made in the last month or so, and he is really optimistic about him catching up to "where he is supposed to be" within the next 6 months and being done with therapy at that point. I am really glad that I listened to my gut about Evan being behind and we went ahead and started therapy so young, because had we waited until he was 2, we would have just started a month or so ago and he would be even farther behind.

Here is a short video of a few words. Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention that I cut his hair on Sunday, so it doesn't look great, but it's not that bad for a free haircut from mom!!!

Oh and about our A/C problems.....that is a whole other post in itself that I will try to write soon!

Evan loves the video, also!! If we watch it, he copies himself, and says all the words, then when it is over, he says,"gain" (again), over and over, he would watch it all day!!!
